Bacteria V/S Antibiotics

Bacteria V/S Antibiotics

Some time back in February 21st, I was asked to make a presentation to a group of  Practicing Dental Professionals of Panjim , on the topic of Antibiotics. It was a small group but a very receptive and involved audience that made the talk worthwhile. The focus was placed on the arbitrary use of Antibiotics which according to a survey in Scotland, “75% of  antibiotics were inappropriately prescribed in patients attending emergency dental clinics”

I am grateful to GSK for giving me the opportunity to share my views and interact with the august audience.

This has been a eye opener for the Covid 19 virus attack we are facing now.

Noronha V/S Corona

Noronha V/S Corona

The reality is in our face. The virus has once more brought everything to a halt. How long can man abuse the system and not face the consequences?

As Dentists, we fall in the high risk category and the safety of our patients, staff and our families is of paramount importance.

Disinfectants, hand sanitisers, chlorhexidine rinses,  repeated wiping of chairs, surfaces and door handles besides the routine sterilisation of all instruments and use of disposables wherever possible have been the norm ever since Corona surfaced. Add to that, inquiring into the personal lives of our patients if they have been travelling, or in contact with people who have travelled or have come in contact or know any one suffering from the virus symptoms… all very scary. We have restricted to attending to only the emergency situations and that has given us the time to introspect on life and our mission here.  Do we serve or do we hibernate?? is this what is expected of us  or should we be doing more.

The main solution is to quarantine especially during the most contagious part of the disease to control the spread.   The question however rides on how far can we socially disconnect so that the spread can be contained? Can we sustain this or will it be an ongoing struggle.

The silver lining is that  we can now think of where we are going in this MAD RACE, and if life has to come to a standstill, its only for the betterment of the planet earth we live in and the recuperation of mother nature.

Talk on Oral Hygiene by Dr. Kunti Makwana

Talk on Oral Hygiene by Dr. Kunti Makwana

I was nervous as it was my first experience being alone and having to face so many kids, teachers and school staff all eagerly waiting for my talk. It was Oral hygiene that I was to speak on, a topic which is so dear to me that preparing for it was easy and all of a sudden everything was hard and scary.

Standing up in front of everyone  somehow gave me some confidence to talk. Seeing the rapt attention that the kids gave me and the responsiveness and the interaction during the presentation, it all seemed easy. The kids were curious to know more and asked questions.  Seeing a slide of mine which had celebrities without teeth, made them laugh. Even the teachers got so engrossed that later I spent some nice moments explaining in detail to them.

They all realized the importance of their teeth, they learnt how to look after them  and i was impressed to see some teachers recording on their phones, the brushing technique which I was explaining . I even made few kids practice the technique on the model which they did with lot of curiosity.

Finally I ended my talk with few “take home messages” which were appreciated by the kids as well as the teachers who personally came and congratulated me for the same. I was pleased with their good positive response and appreciation which eventually made me happy and even more confident with myself.

The session ended with a a group photograph where the photographer of the program insisted everyone to show their ‘good hygiene’ teeth.

I am thankful to JCI club for organising this event and Saraswat College Mapuca for this oppurtunity.

Dr. Hammo’s webinar creates records

Dr. Hammo’s webinar creates records

This was potentially the biggest event in Indian dentistry.  Over 60 centers  and thousands of registered participants as well as another couple of thousands logged on, watching in the comfort of their homes/ offices. Dr Hammo mesmerized the audience with his very extensive and simplified methods on handling molar endodontics. He showed over a hundred cases  explaining the process in his 6 hours of live presentation, beamed across the country.

The moderator for the Goa Center was Dr. Fernando Noronha. He ensured that the full event was conducted well. He was coordinating with the moderator at the Live center Dr. Ajay Bajaj to ensure there were no glitches and that the queries of the participants were addressed and answered.

72nd Indian Dental Conference

72nd Indian Dental Conference

Published by: Dr.Denise Fernandes

Our team of doctors had the opportunity to attend the Indian Dental Conference,2019. The conference was in Indore, which is in Madhya Pradesh. It was an insightful experience, as we had a chance to listen to different speakers from all over India. The topics were as varied as the speakers, from indirect pulp capping to Re- root canals.

Encouraged by Dr. Noronha, I set out to give a small talk on the topic of Post and Core. Since it was my first time presenting, it was a bit daunting but I put my best foot forward and went ahead. The experience was satisfying and I learned never to shirk away from challenges.

I also had the chance to meet a few of my professors and batch mates from my BDS days, it was nice to catch up on all  the college gossip. Not only did we get to listen to talks, but we also got to do a little sight seeing. We visited Mandu, which is an ancient city in Indore. The palaces and courtyards were picturesque and we had the chance of taking a lot of selfies.

We got to try a lot of the street food of  Indore like Shikanji (which is a local sweet) , Kachori (which is my favourite) and Tawa ice cream.

Overall the experience was Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!!!

BY Dr. Kunti Makwana.

We, Dr. Fernando Noronha’s team had attended the national conference which was the 72nd INDIAN DENTAL CONFERENCE 2019 held in Indore Madhya Pradesh.

There were numerous lectures held in the conference by  good Indian and International speakers on various topics which covered almost entire scope of dentistry right from basics to advanced dental problems and complications, treatments. The topics gave solutions for everyday problems, the latest technologies and innovations in dental fields.

I enjoyed  many lectures for the upcoming dentists as well as on the future of dentistry.

The lectures were very useful and informative. We got to learn many new things on dentistry.

I had an amazing experience attending the conference . Our team was fun , enthusiatic and energetic.

Due to the encouragement received from Dr. Fernando Noronha, I was able to give a presentation in front of a big crowd of dentists and judges. Initially I was scared and nervous with all butterflies in my stomach till I went on the dais. But all’s well that ends well… ended my presentation with a loud applause from the audience and appreciation from the judges and was also awarded with a certificate. It was a moment that I will cherish throughout my life.

First time in my life I gave a dental presentation,  that too at a national level forum. It was an awesome experience.

At the inaugural function there was a lovely entertainment program which i enjoyed.

Apart from this we also got a chance to visit different beautiful historic places in Indore which had a mesmerizing view and also had experience of the delicious Indore food.

Overall we had a very nice time learnt many new things new experience in life and I’m glad to be a part of Dr. Noronha’s team.
